M7.4 Blog about your local environmental services

Review your local (city or county) health department's website and list the services that you would consider Environmental Health Services. 
I reviewed the Alameda County Public Health Department website (http://www.acphd.org/programs-and-services.aspx) for this blog post. I was surprised by the breadth of services and programs they had listed on their website. I was disappointed at how poorly organized and difficult to navigate the website itself is, but it seems there is some useful information hidden in all of the overwhelming links they have on their website. Out of all of the programs and services listed on their website, the ones that I would consider environmental health services are:
- Asthma Start Program
- Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP)
- Community Assessment, Planning, and Evaluation (CAPE)
- Ebola
- Emergency Preparedness - Public Health Emergency Preparedness (PHEP)
- Enterovirus D68
- Equity, Social & Health
- Hantavirus
- Lead Poison Prevention
- Rabies
- Shoo the Flu
- Tobacco Control Program
- West Nile Virus
- Wildfire Smoke
- Zika

I was surprised to see an entire program dedicated to wildfire smoke, although I was really glad to see it! I was also surprised that there was nothing on gun violence prevention. I appreciated the Shoo the Flu initiative that is a community-based program that provides vaccinations in schools.

    It will be our job as public health professionals to run sites and programs that will assist the people in our communities. Whatever Alameda county website is missing we can make it better since we are both residents of that county. I'm interested to see what the Rabies program is all about.

M5.2 Safe Drinking Water

Safe drinking water is one of the most essential needs of our health. Safe drinking water is a universal basic human right that every person should be guaranteed. It is my view that this is the least our government should be able to guarantee for us. The Clean Water Act has such profound public health significance because it regulates the discharge of pollutants into all our country's lakes, rivers, streams, wetlands, coastal areas, and other surface waters. Under the Clean Water Act, the EPA sets national standards for water quality and defines water quality criteria, including the specific levels of various pollutants that are allowable under these criteria. The Clean Water Act is a vital step in the right direction, but we need stricter standards and evidence-based criteria for water quality. We need stronger advocacy for policies that protect all our water.

CHOOSE ONE of the following organizations/agencies: OSHA, CAL/OSHA, NIOSH, ILO, WHO, AFL-CIO Go to their website. Each of these occupational safety and health or labor organizations support a range of occupational health and safety programs.
