BLOG about the following:
Recall your last night's meal. Go to the What's on my Food website and enter the foods that comprised your meal. The information on the site is based on foods that are NOT "organic".
What did you find out about the pesticide residues that may be in or on your food? What do you think about this? What should we be doing about this in terms of public health, not just in terms of our personal choices?
Last night for dinner I made a white bean chicken chili soup (recipe: https://www.asaucykitchen.com/white-bean-chicken-chili-soup-instant-pot/). The ingredients I used in this meal are:
- 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 1 medium white onion, chopped
- 1 jalapeño pepper, deseeded and chopped
- 4 large cloves of garlic, minced or crushed
- 2 teaspoons dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
- 3 cups low sodium chicken stock
- 1 pound skinless chicken breast
- 2 cans (15 oz) cannellini beans or another white bean, drained and rinsed
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon sea salt, or to taste
- 2 Limes
- 1 Avocado
On the "what's on my food" website, I checked what was on the following ingredients and listed the pesticides I found next to each one:
- White onion -
- Jalapeño pepper -
- Garlic -
- Poultry breast - Piperonyl butoxide, MGK-264, DDE p,p', Carbaryl, Boscalid, Fipronil, Pyrethrins
- Limes -
- Avocado - Imiprothrin
They did not have information for all the foods I used, but I found this resource very informative. I always question whether I should buy organic groceries, especially because I am a student on a budget, but using this made me feel reassured that it is worth the extra cost.
That recipe looks yummy! I think I will try making the organic version. The ingredients in your "chicken" looks really strange and absolutely shouldn't be there. I wonder when we are going to really see the effects of all of these chemicals in our food. Maybe then these corporations will see that they are just bringing harm to their customers.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I saw jalapeno could be interpreted as : Hot Peppers
